Gonadotrophin and the human secondary sex ratio.

A review of published reports showed that the sex ratio (proportion of boys) was low among infants conceived after ovulation had been induced. The difference between the observed sex ratio and an expected one of 0 . 514 was highly significant. These findings suggest that maternal gonadotrophin concentrations at the time of conception directly affect the sex of the zygote.

Adaptation of HIV-1 Depends on the Host-Cell Environment

Many viruses have the ability to rapidly develop resistance against antiviral drugs and escape from the host immune system. To which extent the host environment affects this adaptive potential of viruses is largely unknown. Here we show that for HIV-1, the host-cell environment is key to the adaptive potential of the virus. We performed a large-scale selection experiment with two HIV-1 strains ...

Maternal lead exposure and the secondary sex ratio.

BACKGROUND A reduction in the secondary sex ratio may be associated with exposure to environmental toxicants. Little data exists relating this outcome to lead exposure, a well-known reproductive toxicant. METHODS We studied 1980 women having singleton births from 1994 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2001 who participated in a cohort study of lead exposure and infant outcomes in Mexico City. Levels o...

Human semen quality and the secondary sex ratio

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between semen quality and the secondary sex ratio (SSR), defined as the ratio of male to female live births. Our study cohort comprised 227 male partners who were enrolled prior to conception in Michigan and Texas between 2005 and 2009, and prospectively followed through delivery of a singleton birth. The male partners provided a baseline an...

Can economic stress affect secondary sex ratio in Poland?

The ratio of male to female births described as the male proportion is expected to be about 1.06. The secondary sex ratio can be influenced by various stresses experienced by parents (e.g., parents’ exposure to chemical and physical pollution, natural phenomena, wars and economic crises). The seminal study in this field speculated that fewer goods and services than needed or desired might suffi...
